Alone-ly boy

When: Saturday night
What: Hanging out
Summary: Val is getting lonely in his new apartment and looks for some company
Incomplete/ Complete:Complete

Valentine was pleased to have his own apartment, away from his mother's influence. Sure, it was nice to have his own place. His own couch, where he could put his feet up. His own kitchen, where he could leave the door to the refrigerator open for as long as he liked. He could drink his milk straight out of the carton. The freedom and novelty of this had lasted all day. But as night came around, he started hearing sounds in the silence. It was too quiet, so any creak from some floorboard in a neighboring apartment sounded like a gunshot. He tried turning on the television, but the programing all seemed to be something that made him edgy. Music was no better. This was the first night of his life, all nearly-19 years of it, that he'd ever spent alone. And it was creeping him out.

Telling himself he'd just head down to the little apartment lounge and get a soda, Valentine hurried out into the hallway. There had to be people... somewhere, right? Other people lived here.

"Iiiiii'm saaailing awaaaaaay..." a voice echoed from the lounge. "Set a courrrrse for the ooopen seeaaaaaa..."

It wasn't exactly good singing.

Valentine padded towards the lounge. Axe-murderers didn't sing, right?

Valentine peered around the corner to see who was doing the singing.

A familiar-looking fellow was in the lounge, singing merrily -- one of the studio security guards, from the look of things (and the fact that he was still wearing his ID badge and work shirt.) Apparently, his shift was over. Unfortunately, his music career never even began.

"Hey," Valentine said, giving him a friendly smile. "Pete, right?"

He double-checked the ID badge, and was pleased to see he was right. "How's it going?"
Feb. 2nd, 2008 06:50 am (UTC)
"Oh, hey! Hi! Hey, Mr. Valentine!" Pete turned and beamed cheerfully. "I didn't know you lived here in this building - how're you?"
Feb. 2nd, 2008 07:02 am (UTC)
"Just Val," Valentine said, feeling a bit self-conscious about someone older than him calling him Mr. anything, and not particularly caring for his full name.

"Yeah, I remembered you mentioning it when we talked at the studio - and I thought I'd come give it a go. They tried to talk me into getting a place more uptown, but I liked this place when I took a look at it..."

"Well, the rates are decent and there hasn't been a murder in this area this week," Pete replied cheerfully. "It's a nice place."
Feb. 2nd, 2008 07:17 am (UTC)
"This week?" Valentine asked, feeling suddenly less secure in his housing choice.

A week without a murder didn't sound like a great track record. "Is that... good?"
Feb. 2nd, 2008 08:02 am (UTC)
"Well, considering that covers pretty much the entire island, that doesn't mean much," Pete answered cheerfully.
Feb. 2nd, 2008 08:19 am (UTC)
"Oh um, cool then," Valentine said, finding the good cheer slightly unnerving at the moment.

Still, it was better than being alone. He walked over to the soda machine, and fished out a few quarters from his pocket.

"Want a pop?" he offered to Pete.
Feb. 2nd, 2008 08:20 am (UTC)
"Sure!" Pete nodded. "Press the 'orange' button -- it's really root beer."
Feb. 2nd, 2008 08:29 am (UTC)
Valentine laughed and put enough coins in for two drinks.

Sure enough, when he pressed the Orange button, out came Root Beers.

He smiled, and handed one of the cans over to Pete. "Someone loaded it wrong, I guess..."
Feb. 2nd, 2008 08:35 am (UTC)
"Yeah, I don't know who loads it, but it always dispenses root beer from the orange button. I think maybe it's the landlord and he just likes to hide the root beer." Pete reflected on that a moment. "Or the landlady. They're a married couple, after all."
Feb. 2nd, 2008 08:53 am (UTC)
"Are they nice?" Valentine asked, settling on the couch to pop the top of his pop and have a sip.

"I mean, other than the drink switching- which doesn't really sound mean, exactly, just kinda of mischievous."
Feb. 2nd, 2008 09:05 am (UTC)
"They're good people," Pete assured him. "Now the guy in room 12 is sort of a jerk. He plays guitar at odd hours."
Feb. 2nd, 2008 09:30 am (UTC)
"Oh yeah? I'll have to remember that," Valentine said.

He considered whether listening to guitar playing at odd hours would be fun.

"Is he a good guitar player though?"
Feb. 2nd, 2008 09:39 am (UTC)
"Eh.... Well, he's getting better," Pete said with a shrug. "But still, three in the morning is not guitar time."
Feb. 2nd, 2008 06:54 pm (UTC)
"Not usually, no," Valentine agreed.

He would make it a point to check for the guitar player the next time he couldn't sleep though.

"Is there anything else I should know about the building?"
Feb. 2nd, 2008 07:06 pm (UTC)
"There's no such thing as pirate ghosts?" Pete offered.
Feb. 2nd, 2008 07:09 pm (UTC)
Valentine laughed. "I learned that from watching Scooby Doo. Do we have an Old Man Jenkins?"

He shifted slightly on the couch to get more comfortable, yawning a bit.
Feb. 2nd, 2008 07:31 pm (UTC)
"No, but the landlord's last name is Perkins," Pete said. "I don't think there's any buried gold around here, though."
Feb. 2nd, 2008 07:54 pm (UTC)
"I won't waste my time digging then," Valentine said.

He settled his head against the couch cushions. Comfy.

"So what's there to do for fun around here, anyhow?"
Feb. 2nd, 2008 08:02 pm (UTC)
"Depends on what you're into, I guess," Pete shrugged. "There's minigolf. There's clubs. There's a theater. And of course, there's enough shopping here to rival eBay."
Feb. 2nd, 2008 08:27 pm (UTC)
"Minigolf -hah. I haven't played that since I was little. That could be fun. And hm, maybe a club, yeah. And the theater, sure..."

Valentine pondered the shopping. "What kind of shops? Just like, clothes and all that- or do they have any interesting ones?"
Feb. 2nd, 2008 08:29 pm (UTC)
Sherry headed in, holding a couple of shopping bags.

"Hiya!" she said, cheerfully "How's things?"
Feb. 2nd, 2008 08:38 pm (UTC)
"Ask her," Pete suggested, pointing out Sherry and her baggage.
Feb. 2nd, 2008 09:03 pm (UTC)
"Oh Pete... I got something for you." Sherry dropped her bags, and handed Pete something wrapped in tissue wrap "It's a good luck charm. You can stick it in your wallet, or something. "

Feb. 2nd, 2008 09:19 pm (UTC)
"Really?" Pete beamed. "Thank you, miss Marchese!"
Feb. 2nd, 2008 09:29 pm (UTC)
Valentine smiled, and looked at the little charm.

"That's really cool- are those coins?"
Feb. 2nd, 2008 10:18 pm (UTC)
"I think they're Chinese lucky coins," Pete said, holding them up. He honestly wasn't certain, but it made sense to him.
Feb. 3rd, 2008 03:26 am (UTC)
"Chinese lucky coins." confirmed Sherry.
Feb. 3rd, 2008 04:38 am (UTC)
"Sweet," Valentine said. "Is there like, a Chinatown on the island?"

He could go for some beef and broccoli.
Feb. 3rd, 2008 04:45 am (UTC)
"No." Sherry shook her head "If there is, I didn't find it. I found a little store that sells odds and ends, and they had some coins. I love little shops like that."
Feb. 3rd, 2008 03:25 am (UTC)
"Not a problem, Pete." Sherry smiled.
